故事裡，一位老太太不知為什麼，竟然把一隻蒼蠅（fly)吞了下去。接著，她為了抓住前一隻動物，又陸續吞下越來越大的動物：

fly → spider → bird → cat → dog → cow → horse

每增加一種動物，前面的動物也會一起被串進故事裡，因此內容會不斷重複、越來越荒謬, 到了最後，老太太竟然吞下了一匹馬（horse），故事也以荒誕、誇張的方式收尾。
